How long whitening lasts, in practice
- The first two weeks: the teeth lose a little of the shade reached in the chair. This is normal: they rehydrate after the treatment. What you see after two weeks is your real result.
- After that: the colour stays stable for a long time and fades slowly, over one to three years.
- The limit: every tooth lightens only so far. Yellowish teeth usually respond better than greyish ones. Repeating sessions to go past that limit adds sensitivity, not whiteness.

What makes it fade sooner

How to keep the result
- Brush twice a day and floss; a whitening toothpaste helps against new surface stains, it does not whiten further.
- Have a professional cleaning twice a year (€60 at our clinic).
- Book a touch-up when the shade has faded to where you no longer like it, not on a fixed schedule; the dentist checks the enamel and gums first.
- If your teeth are sensitive, tell the dentist before any touch-up.
Crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten
Whitening lightens natural enamel only. Crowns, veneers, bridges and fillings keep their colour. If one of them shows when you smile, it will look darker after whitening and may need replacing to match. The right order is: cleaning, then whitening, then any new crown or veneer, so the laboratory matches its colour to your whitened teeth. Who should not whiten
Children with baby teeth, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone allergic to peroxide. Decay, gum disease and exposed roots are treated first: whitening over them hurts and does not last.
