When a dentist says “ceramic crown”, it can mean three different things: a metal-ceramic crown (porcelain fused to a metal core), a zirconia crown (with or without a porcelain layer), or an all-ceramic glass crown such as E-max. They differ in how natural they look, how much force they take and what they cost. The short answer: zirconia for teeth that show when you smile and for people who grind, metal-ceramic for back teeth on a tighter budget. Looks: the grey line at the gum
Metal-ceramic crowns have a metal core. As long as the gum covers the edge, nobody sees it; when the gum recedes with age, a thin dark line can appear at the gum margin, and the metal makes the crown slightly less translucent than a natural tooth. It is a common reason people replace old crowns on front teeth (see why a dark line appears around an old crown).
Zirconia is white all the way through, so there is no grey margin. Zirconia-ceramic, with porcelain layered on top, gives the most natural surface on front teeth; E-max lets even more light through: see the difference between zirconia and E-max. Zirconia is also more opaque than E-max, which is an advantage when a crown must hide a dark tooth or a metal post.
Strength: who grinds, and which teeth work hardest
Molars take the heaviest bite. Monolithic zirconia has no porcelain layer that can chip, which makes it our choice for molars and for people who grind or clench their teeth; if you grind, we also recommend a night guard. On a layered crown (metal-ceramic or zirconia-ceramic) the weak point is the porcelain on top, which can chip under heavy force. Metal-ceramic has a long track record and remains a solid choice for back teeth.
How much tooth is filed
Every crown needs the tooth to be shaped so the crown fits over it. A layered crown needs room for two layers, the core and the porcelain; a monolithic zirconia crown can often be made a little thinner. The dentist decides how much to remove on your tooth and your bite, not on the material alone.
How long each one lasts
With good hygiene and a yearly check-up, a zirconia crown typically lasts 10–15 years, and metal-ceramic crowns are also expected to last many years. What usually ends a crown’s life is not the material breaking but decay at the edge of the tooth underneath, gum recession that uncovers the margin, or chipping of the porcelain layer. Is zirconia better than ceramic?
For teeth that show and for people who grind, usually yes: no grey margin and, in the monolithic version, nothing to chip. For back teeth where looks matter less, metal-ceramic is strong and costs less. “Better” depends on the tooth.
Can a zirconia crown break?
Rarely. Monolithic zirconia is the strongest crown material; with a layered zirconia crown it is the porcelain on top that can chip under very heavy force. If you grind your teeth, a monolithic crown and a night guard reduce the risk.
Why is there a dark line around my old crown?
Most often it is the metal edge of a metal-ceramic crown showing because the gum has receded, or a dark root under it. Replacing it with a zirconia crown removes the metal edge.
Can I have metal-ceramic at the back and zirconia at the front?
