Planning to visit a dentist in Albania? You can often start by sending dental X-rays and any relevant test results from home, especially if you are considering implants or major dental work. You do not need to arrange every possible scan or blood test before speaking with the clinic.
Start With the Dental Records You Already Have
Check whether your dentist in Italy has copies of your existing records. A panoramic X-ray and a short explanation of the problem can help with an initial review.
At Trio Dental Center in Tirana, we accept panoramic X-rays through our contact form. You can also send photos or X-rays through WhatsApp for an early discussion.
Start with these records if you have them:
- A panoramic dental X-ray, if you already have one.
- Any other dental images taken for the teeth you want treated.
- A written diagnosis or treatment report, if your dentist has provided one.
- Your main concern, such as missing teeth, a broken crown or repeated tooth pain.
- Relevant medical information, especially if you are considering surgery.
Which Dental X-Rays Are Useful Before Travelling?
The most useful image depends on the treatment you need. One image cannot answer every question.
Panoramic X-ray: a useful overall picture
A panoramic X-ray, sometimes called an OPG or orthopantomogram, shows both jaws and most of your teeth in one image. It can help us see missing teeth, existing restorations and areas that may need closer attention.
It is a starting point for dental implants in Albania, but cannot show every detail of jawbone width or nearby anatomical structures. That is why surgical planning needs additional information.
3D dental CT scan: important for implant planning
A cone-beam CT scan, also called CBCT or a 3D dental scan, provides more detailed views of the jaw. Dentists use it to assess bone and nearby structures before implant surgery.
If you already have a CBCT scan, tell us when it was taken and ask how to share the original files. For implant patients, our clinic also uses 3D CT imaging in Tirana, so there is no reason to arrange another scan independently unless the dental team requests one.
Small X-rays: helpful for individual teeth
A periapical X-ray focuses on one or a few teeth, including their roots. It may be particularly useful when you have had root canal treatment, an infection or a problem beneath an existing crown.

Match Your Records to the Treatment You Want
Not every patient needs the same documents. Use this quick guide to decide what to look for in your existing dental records.
| Planned treatment | Useful information to send |
| Single or multiple implants | Panoramic X-ray; existing CBCT if available; notes about previous extractions or grafts |
| Full-arch implant treatment | Panoramic X-ray; reports about remaining teeth; details of any existing implants |
| Crowns or bridges | X-rays of the affected teeth; details of old crowns, root canal treatment or repeated breakages |
| Faccette dentali | Clear photographs and any relevant dental reports about gum health, cavities or previous restorations |
| Root canal problems | Small dental X-rays, previous treatment details and an explanation of your symptoms |
For crowns and other tooth restorations, an examination is still needed to check the tooth and bite. This helps us choose a suitable restoration.
Do You Need Blood Test Results?
Usually, not for every dental appointment. Routine blood tests are not a standard requirement for everyone considering veneers, crowns or a check-up. For surgery, some medical conditions make recent test results useful.
For example, your dentist may ask about:
- Diabetes: a recent HbA1c result, if available, to understand longer-term blood sugar control before implant surgery.
- Blood-thinning medication: the medication name and, for some patients taking warfarin, an INR result when specifically requested.
- Other significant medical conditions: relevant specialist letters or test results if they affect surgery, healing or medication choices.
- Medication for osteoporosis or cancer: the exact medicine and treatment history, which may change dental surgical planning.
Send Records That the Dentist Can Actually Read
A good image is more helpful than a large folder of blurry screenshots. If your dentist can email the original digital X-ray or scan, ask for that version rather than taking a photo of a screen.
Before sending, check these details:
- The image or report includes the date it was taken.
- The whole image is visible, without reflections or cropped edges.
- Written reports are clear enough to read.
- For 3D scans, you can provide the original scan files if requested.
- You explain which teeth are bothering you and whether symptoms have changed since the image was taken.
If your records are in Italian, you can send them as they are. Our team offers support in Italian and English, and we can tell you if clarification or translation is needed for a particular report.
Ask which clinic contact channel is suitable before sharing large files or sensitive medical reports. We can explain how to send them.
What We Can Check Before You Arrive in Tirana
Your records help us discuss possible treatments, unanswered questions and appointment planning. They cannot confirm a diagnosis on their own.
At the clinic, your dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite. For implants, 3D imaging informs the surgical plan, which may change after the in-person assessment.
You can read more about how visits are organised on our dental tourism page. If you currently have increasing swelling, fever or severe dental pain, seek prompt local dental care rather than waiting until your trip.
Domande frequenti
Can I contact the clinic if I have no X-rays?
Yes. Describe the problem and send clear dental photos if possible, then ask what information would help with the first assessment. The clinic may recommend imaging later rather than asking you to arrange it immediately.
How old can my dental X-ray be?
There is no single expiry date that works for every case. An older image may still help show treatment history, but a new one may be necessary if teeth were removed, symptoms developed or your dental condition changed.
Should I send the radiologist’s written report too?
Yes, if one came with your scan. The images and report provide different information, and the dental team may need to examine both before discussing treatment options.
Can photos replace an X-ray for veneers?
Photos are useful for showing the appearance of your smile, but they cannot reveal hidden decay or problems around tooth roots. Your dentist may need an examination and selected X-rays before deciding whether dental veneers are appropriate.
Will sending my tests guarantee that treatment can begin on arrival?
No. Remote review is preliminary, and some findings can only be confirmed through a clinical examination or further imaging. We will explain what still needs checking so you can plan your visit with realistic expectations.
