A veneer needs only a thin layer of enamel to be removed from the front of the tooth. What went wrong in the "Turkey teeth" stories many people have seen was not veneers but full crowns on healthy teeth, filed down to stumps to make a quick, very white smile. We do not do that: if your teeth are healthy, the plan is veneers or whitening, not crowns, and the dentist shows you on the plan how much enamel will be removed before you agree.

A veneer is a shell of porcelain usually about 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick, bonded with a light-cured composite cement to the front of a tooth. To make room for it, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth; on small or narrow teeth sometimes none at all. Veneers can close gaps, lengthen short or worn teeth, cover stains that whitening cannot remove and even out the shape of a smile. They do not straighten crooked teeth: for that, clear aligners come first.
We use two materials. E-max (lithium disilicate) is the most translucent and looks most like enamel on front teeth; zirconia is stronger and hides dark teeth better. The dentist chooses with you from your photos, and your quote states the material for each tooth.
Porcelain veneers (E-max or zirconia) are made in the laboratory from a scan of your prepared teeth and bonded at a second appointment. They keep their colour, resist coffee, tea, wine and smoking stains, and usually last 10 to 15 years. Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth in resin in one visit, need little or no enamel removed and cost less, but they stain and chip sooner and usually last 5 to 8 years. We quote porcelain veneers at €350–400 per tooth; if composite suits your case better, the dentist says so in your plan.
Veneers are the right choice for gaps between front teeth, small or worn teeth, chipped edges, old discoloured fillings on front teeth and stains that whitening cannot remove. When the problem is only colour, try whitening first; when a tooth is weakened, a crown protects it better.
Plan from home. Send smile photos on WhatsApp; the dentist proposes the number of veneers, the material and a fixed price.
Smile design. In the clinic the dentist takes photos and a scan and shows you the new shape with a mock-up on your own teeth before anything is prepared.
Preparation. A thin layer of enamel is removed where needed, the teeth are scanned and you wear temporaries while our laboratory makes the veneers.
Try-in and bonding. Shape and colour are checked with you; only when you agree are the veneers bonded and the bite adjusted. You leave with the invoice and care instructions.
Veneers wait, or are not the right choice, when there is untreated gum disease or decay (treated first), when little enamel is left because of wear, and in people who grind their teeth or bite nails, pens or ice, unless they wear a night guard. The dentist checks this on your photos and X-ray before quoting.

No procedure in our office is painful, since the necessary anesthesia is always done so that you do not feel the slightest pain. In addition, the procedure is not very painful because the removal of dental substance is very conservative.

Porcelain veneers usually last 10 to 15 years with good cleaning, a night guard if you grind your teeth, and a check-up once a year. Composite veneers last less, about 5 to 8 years, because the resin stains and chips sooner.
