What are Veneers?

Dental Veneers are a porcelain coating in the form of thin plates (3-5 mm) that are applied to the front part of the tooth. This procedure is the fastest way to restore your teeth. During the placement of porcelain veneers there is no need for significant grinding of your teeth, only the upper layer of enamel is ground, then an accounting is made, according to which the necessary preparation will be made. In addition, the lining on the teeth – veneers – is attached to them with the help of a special composite glue, which hardens under light and exposure to chemicals. Using this method of attachment contributes to a longer lifespan.

Teeth Veneers are not only placed on healthy teeth; you can do this on polarized ones. In fact, they are more aesthetic in nature, because with their help visible defects, such as bites, are eliminated. In addition, with them the smile looks natural, charming and beautiful. Ceramic or Porcelain Veneers are also used to change the position of the tooth in a row, to restore or correct its shape.

Now that we know what dental veneers are, we can decide in which cases they should be placed. Indications for the construction of veneers can serve as large gaps, cracks, irregularities in the surface of the teeth and stains on them, incorrect arrangement of the series, fillings, different colors and so on.

Types of Dental Veneers

There are two types of Dental Veneers, Porcelain and Composite resin. When produced and placed well, both types can give you a beautiful and attractive smile, but what are the differences between both types?

Composite Resin Veneers

Modern resin composites can provide a vivid, beautiful appearance that is not destructive to the tooth structure and can last for a long period of time.

With a composite resin veneer, a filling material on the teeth, which matches the natural color of your teeth, is applied in layers on the surface of your teeth and is formed in a straight line in your mouth in order to achieve the desired and needed aesthetic appearance. Composite resin veneers are used in situations where there is a fracture or discoloration of natural teeth. They are additionally used when there are minor misalignments of the teeth, to give the appearance of more attractive teeth.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells, which are specially made to fit your teeth directly.

Porcelain veneers create a very vigorous and natural tooth appearance. The diaphanous properties of porcelain give the face the opportunity to mimic the light handling characteristics of the enamel, giving the tooth a sense of intensity and deepness. Porcelain veneers are used to recreate the natural appearance of teeth, while they as well providing hardiness and durability comparable to natural tooth enamel.

Differences Between Composite Resin Veneers and Porcelain Veneers

Composite Resin Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Composite Resin Veneers which can discolor over time. Although with modern materials the discoloration is minimal.

Porcelain Veneers resist the daily staining of smoking, tea, coffee, red wine and other dark or richly colored liquids or spices.

The composite resin veneers can be repaired by your dentist in just one visit.

Porcelain veneers cannot be repaired. If the porcelain vents are broken, they must be replaced.

Composite resin veneers usually last 5-8 years, so they need to be renewed or replaced more often, as the resin material used is not as strong as porcelain.

Porcelain veneers are durable and can last for many years, usually 10-15 years, if you take care of them using a good oral hygiene routine at home.

Composite resin veneers are cheaper than porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite resin veneers because they require a dental laboratory to make them and therefore cost more.

Composite resin veneers are achieved in one visit and are made next to the dentist.

Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and therefore require at least two visits for the preparation and placement of the veneers.

Composite resin veneers are attached directly to the tooth surface and therefore do not cause any damage or destruction to the tooth.

Porcelain veneers require the removal of part of the tooth surface, when a tooth has been prepared for appearance the tooth structure is damaged and the tooth preparation is irreversible.

When are Dental Veneers Recommended?

Dental veneers are a solution of choice in many cases, such as:

  1. in fine teeth, in order to “close” the spaces between the teeth,
  2. in teeth with multiple fillings that are either discolored or in need of replacement,
  3. in discolored teeth,
  4. in cases where it is necessary to change the shape of the existing tooth (e.g., third incision fracture),
  5. in cases where the purely aesthetic and natural result is the main requirement of the patient,
  6. in cases where the patient wants a permanent and unchanging dazzling white smile!

The Procedure of Dental Veneers Placement

First Appointment

Initially, prints of the upper and lower jaw as well as photographs of the teeth are taken. Then, on the other hand, it takes place a discussion with the patient in order to understand the dentist, his expectations and on the other hand to understand – the patient – what can be done and what cannot, what are the possibilities of his choice. The tooth prints are sent to the collaborating dental laboratory, which, following the dentist’s instructions, manufactures the “ideal” teeth, the “ideal” smile, with the “teeth waxing technique”!

Second Appointment

The dentist demonstrates the diagnostic wax of teeth to the patient, who thus gets a first taste of the final result. For the reason that, most of the time it is very difficult for patients to understand the final result even from the diagnostic wax, we go one step further! (This step can be done either at the same appointment or at the next one). With the mock up technique, we can show the patient on the spot how the final result will be.

Third Appointment

If the patient agrees with the result, then in the third appointment, which is the longest in duration, the necessary treatment of the teeth is completed, the final impressions are taken and finally the “rough” faces are made, which will follow the patient up to the faces of porcelain to be ready.

Fourth Appointment

On the fourth date, the first “rehearsal” takes place in order to find that everything went as expected when taking the final tooth print.

Fifth Appointment – Last Appointment

In the fifth appointment, the final “rehearsal” takes place where we see the shape and color of the faces and make all the necessary changes, if necessary, of course. If the changes are not many or large, the next appointment is the last one where the gluing of the veneers to the teeth takes place. If the changes were significant, another appointment is scheduled before the final welding.

What are the Benefits of Dental Veneers?

Benefits of Composite Resin Veneers

They are a more conservative approach that is completely remedial as it does not require grinding the teeth. Painless procedure and economical solution as it is not mediated by a dental laboratory but the restoration is done directly by the dentist.

It should be noted, however, that the effect is not permanent as the material absorbs pigments and needs frequent replacement.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Because porcelain has a similar transparency to that of enamel, restorations with it can achieve a flawless aesthetic result. With porcelain veneers we radically change the smile and finally the appearance of the patient’s face. They are also resistant to the adsorption of pigments while maintaining their original shape and color. Thus, we have a permanent and unchanging result for several years.

In Which Cases is the Placement of Dental Veneers Avoided?

There are some contraindications to the placement of dental veneers, which are:

  • In patients who gnash or grit their teeth (bruxism)
  • In patients with gingivitis – periodontitis. The gums must be treated first and if a healthy periodontium and proper oral hygiene are achieved, we can proceed with the dental veneer’s procedure.
  • In patients with reduced dental tissue adequacy
  • In teeth with caries problems
  • In cases where there is no enamel left due to wear or abrasion
  • In patients who have a habit of biting nails, pencils and ice

If you have any of those conditions contact the staff of Trio Dental Center and we will schedule you an appointment in order to examine your teeth.

No procedure in our office is painful, since the necessary anesthesia is always done so that you do not feel the slightest pain. In addition, the procedure is not very painful because the removal of dental substance is very conservative.

The answer is yes. If it is an incident in which we want to eliminate the gaps between the teeth (fine teeth), if the patient has small teeth (nanodonts) and wants to enlarge them, if he wants to change the color of the teeth.

Of course! We have photos from several patients, which we often show to our patients. The reason for this is because we want to give our clients a taste of our own work as well as explain some details about the procedure. Of course, no patient and case are the same as the rest and therefore the final results. However, you can check our website and you will see some of our previous clients.
