Zirconia is zirconium dioxide, a white ceramic and the strongest material used for crowns. It is opaque, so it hides a dark tooth or a metal post, and it does not wear or crack easily. A monolithic zirconia crown is milled from one solid block with no porcelain layer that can chip: our choice for molars and for people who grind. A zirconia-ceramic crown has a zirconia core with ceramic layered on top for a more natural surface.
E-max is lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic that lets light through like enamel. It is strong enough for front teeth and premolars and gives the most natural look where the smile shows, which is why it is also used for veneers. It is less suited to molars under heavy force, and it cannot hide a very dark tooth as well as zirconia.
Both materials are metal-free and biocompatible, both can replace old metal-ceramic crowns that show a grey line at the gum, and both are made in our laboratory from a digital scan. The choice is about the tooth: E-max or zirconia-ceramic in front for translucency, monolithic zirconia at the back for strength. If you grind your teeth, we recommend zirconia and a night guard.
Whichever of the four types of crown you choose (metal-ceramic, zirconia-ceramic, monolithic zirconia or E-max), it is placed in at least two appointments.
Preparation. Under local anaesthesia the tooth is shaped: a thin layer is removed all round so the crown fits over it without looking bulky, and any decay or old filling underneath is treated first.
Scan and temporary crown. The prepared tooth is scanned and you wear a temporary crown (€30) while our laboratory makes the definitive one.
Try-in and cementing. Fit, colour and bite are checked with you; only then is the crown cemented and the bite adjusted. You leave with the itemised invoice and the written 5-year warranty.
How many days you need in Tirana depends on the number of crowns and on whether a root canal comes first; your plan gives the days before you book.
A back tooth that has had a root canal becomes more brittle and usually needs a crown to protect it from breaking. At Trio Dental Center a root canal with a zirconia-ceramic crown costs €210 on a single-root tooth and €230 on a multi-root tooth. The root canal is done by one of our endodontists and the crown is made in our laboratory.
Crowns are priced per tooth. Three worn or broken back teeth with zirconia-ceramic or monolithic zirconia crowns cost €480–600. A missing tooth replaced by an implant, abutment and crown costs €520 with a metal-ceramic crown or €600 with zirconia. Your written quote lists every tooth and its price before you travel.

Do not chew for the first 2 hours, so the cement sets fully. For the first 2 days keep coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco to a minimum. Brush twice a day, clean between the teeth every day with floss or an interdental brush, and use a mouthwash without chlorhexidine. Do not bite nails, ice, pens or other hard objects, and if you grind your teeth, wear a night guard.
