Zirconia and E-max crowns in Albania: prices and which to choose

A crown covers a tooth that is broken, heavily filled or root-treated, or sits on an implant. At Trio Dental Center in Tirana we make three kinds in our own laboratory: zirconia-ceramic (€160), monolithic zirconia (€200) and metal-ceramic (€120), each with a written 5-year warranty. E-max crowns are made for front teeth when translucency matters most; their price is in your quote. Below: which crown for which tooth, what each costs and whether zirconia can break.

What are Zirconia Crowns?

Zirconia is zirconium dioxide, a white ceramic and the strongest material used for crowns. It is opaque, so it hides a dark tooth or a metal post, and it does not wear or crack easily. A monolithic zirconia crown is milled from one solid block with no porcelain layer that can chip: our choice for molars and for people who grind. A zirconia-ceramic crown has a zirconia core with ceramic layered on top for a more natural surface.

What are E-MAX Crowns?

E-max is lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic that lets light through like enamel. It is strong enough for front teeth and premolars and gives the most natural look where the smile shows, which is why it is also used for veneers. It is less suited to molars under heavy force, and it cannot hide a very dark tooth as well as zirconia.

Zirconia or E-max: how we choose

Both materials are metal-free and biocompatible, both can replace old metal-ceramic crowns that show a grey line at the gum, and both are made in our laboratory from a digital scan. The choice is about the tooth: E-max or zirconia-ceramic in front for translucency, monolithic zirconia at the back for strength. If you grind your teeth, we recommend zirconia and a night guard.

Frequently Asked Questions

E-max (lithium disilicate) lets more light through, so it looks most like enamel on front teeth. Zirconia is stronger and more opaque: it hides a dark tooth or a metal post and suits back teeth and people who grind. Monolithic zirconia has no porcelain layer to chip; zirconia-ceramic has a ceramic layer on top for a more natural surface.

It depends on the tooth. For front teeth, zirconia-ceramic or E-max for the most natural look; for molars and for people who grind, monolithic zirconia (€200), which cannot chip; for back teeth on a budget, metal-ceramic (€120). The table above shows our usual choice and why, and your quote states the material for each tooth.

Yes. On an implant the complete tooth — implant, abutment and crown — costs €600 with a zirconia crown or €520 with a metal-ceramic crown. The implant carries a written 10-year warranty and the crown 5 years.

After placing the zirconium crowns, you will need:

  • Minimize the consumption of coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine and other substances that can cause pigment spots, especially in the first 2 days after placement
  • avoid chewing food for the first 2 hours after placing it, for reasons of proper adhesion
  • Brush your teeth often, at least twice a day
  • Floss
  • use an interdental brush
  • use a mouthwash that does not contain chlorhexidine and definitely
  • Avoid biting your nails, chewing ice, biting a pencil or other hard object

At Trio Dental Center in Tirana a zirconia-ceramic crown costs €160 and a monolithic zirconia crown €200; a metal-ceramic crown costs €120. On an implant, the complete tooth with a zirconia crown costs €600. Your quote lists every tooth before you travel.

Zirconia is one of the strongest crown materials, and a monolithic zirconia crown has no porcelain layer that can chip. A layered zirconia-ceramic crown can chip on the surface under heavy force, which is why we choose monolithic zirconia for molars and for people who grind. Crowns carry a written 5-year warranty.

Zirconia has no metal, so no grey line appears at the gum if it recedes, and it is stronger; it costs €160–200. Metal-ceramic costs €120 and is still a solid choice for back teeth that do not show. For front teeth we recommend zirconia or E-max.

Typically 10 to 15 years, often longer, with good cleaning and a check-up once a year. At Trio Dental Center crowns carry a written 5-year warranty against material defects and technical problems.
