A skeletal denture (also called a cobalt-chrome partial denture) replaces several missing teeth when you still have some of your own. Its base is a thin metal frame cast in cobalt-chrome-molybdenum alloy; the artificial teeth and pink gum are set on it, and small clasps or attachments hold it on your remaining teeth. In the upper jaw the frame is shaped like a band across the palate, in the lower jaw like a bar behind the front teeth. Because metal is strong in thin sections, it covers less of the mouth than an acrylic partial denture and moves less when you chew. It is removable: you take it out to clean it.
There are numerous reasons why someone would have a jawbone loss and would need a skeletal teeth prosthesis, however, if you have had a loss of jawbone density, you would certainly be the right candidate for a skeletal teeth prosthesis. Some of the most known causes are:
The frame sits on the inside of your teeth and on the palate, so it is not seen when you speak. Clasps on front teeth can show; where that matters, the dentist can place them on less visible teeth or use attachments.
Take it out after meals and rinse it, brush it twice a day with a soft brush and mild soap, not toothpaste, and keep it in water when you do not wear it. Have it checked once a year, because your gums change and the clasps may need adjusting.
The frame is a cobalt-chrome alloy. Metal allergy to it is uncommon, but tell the dentist if you know you react to metals; then an acrylic or flexible partial denture, or implants, may be the better choice.
